My name is Madison Dempster, and I am from San Francisco, CA. I am currently a rising Junior at St. Lawrence University, planning to study Communications and Political Science.
In my high school years leading up to college, I pursued my academics with an art influence, particularly focusing on photography. During my Junior year, I took a "Social Justice" class that inspired me to use my passion for photography to advocate for what I was learning inside the class room. Thus, my "Art for Justice" was born: visual art is my medium, advocacy is my message, and giving voice is my purpose.
I've been capturing my observations and opinions around civil protest, freedom of the press, food security, and violence against women. As I'm exploring and learning about these topics and how to portray them in the most compelling manner, I didn't realize that I was beginning to incite others to use their voice. I am humbled by having this influence because it is so important that everyone have the bravery to speak up for what they believe in and to take action for positive change.
My hope is for everyone to push themselves to try new things, step out of their comfort zone, or to be the lone voice in pursuit of your beliefs. Whatever it is, big or small, just go for it.
Let us never give up the fight, and continue marching forward together.
