This summer, I am very excited to be a part of ‘Team Gavin’ as an intern on his campaign for Governor of California. That being said, I had the opportunity to join Gavin, his family, and other members of the campaign team for San Francisco’s colorful and vibrant Pride celebration. It was so incredible to experience an event that holds so much meaning to this campaign. The day was surreal, powerful, and overflowing with love.
On January 21, 2017, millions of women joined together world wide to march for our rights and to exercise our freedom of speech. I joined the women who marched in our nation's Capital. We marched for progress. We marched for equality. We marched for resistance. We marched for love. This is what democracy looks like.
One of the biggest problems faced in the United States is the unavailability of fresh, affordable produce. While there are many articles, books, and podcasts addressing this topic, it is still a growing issue. I felt as though people needed to view the struggles of food insecurity through a new medium. In this series I went to the San Rafael Canal (CA), and took photographs on each side. Starting with Whole Foods Market on the "food oasis" side and then going to the liquor store on the "food desert" side, every alternating picture showing the contrast and extremities between the two.
More to come on this series soon!
The Sumba Foundation strives to lessen the consequences of poverty on the island of Sumba. They create village-based projects that tackle the issues of health (such as malaria control), education, water and income-generation. The Sumba Foundation works to do this, all while trying to preserve and respect the culture and traditions of the Sumbanese people. Durning my travels in Sumba, we went on the "Sumba foundation tour," where we visited a school and a malaria clinic built by the foundation. It was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had. We instantly connected with all of the children at the school even though non of us spoke the same language. It is amazing the way kindness and generosity can bring complete strangers together. It is qualities such as those that become an unspoken universal language that can be even stronger than words.
